Applied Learning for Senior Secondary Students

Professional Development Programmes

The HKIAAT has recently run a Professional Development Programme (PDP) for secondary school teachers “Experiencing Applied Learning Courses – Practical Accounting for SMEs” during November and December 2009. The objective is to provide teachers with opportunities to experience our Applied Learning course.

A total of 28 teachers had participated. Teachers were first invited to attend a seminar at the HKIAAT to have an overview of our course including the key learning elements, assessment scheme, recognition and articulation pathways. They then visited CK Yau & Partners CPA Limited, during which they learned about the latest development of the accounting profession and the career path at a CPA firm. Three MYOB workshops then followed whereby teachers had a chance to have hands-on experience on the MYOB software, which is widely-used in our ApL course as a tool for learning accounting theories and skills. At the end of the workshops, teachers had to attempt an assessment which allowed them to attain the MYOB Accredited Trainer Certificate. The said certificate is one of our requirements for co-teaching the course.

The HKIAAT had also organized PDPs in the past years. One in 2007 offered by the Vocational Training Council and the other in 2008 by Caritas Community & Higher Education Service. Topics included an introduction to the ApL course, familiarisation with practical accounting software (MYOB) and visits to the HKIAAT and a CPA firm. A total of 46 teachers have participated in the programmes.

Secondary school teachers who have completed the PDP, fulfilled the qualification requirements and have observed the class delivery for one year will be eligible to co-teach up to 50% of the course.
