The HKIAAT organized taster programmes for Secondary 4 students for the Applied Learning (ApL) course "Practical Accounting for SMEs", and these programmes ran from December 2009 to March 2010. The programmes gave students an introduction to the ApL course to help them make an informed decision in their choice of study in the elective subjects.+

Thoughts from a teacher and student
Yu Chun Keung Memorial College No. 2 has run the Applied Learning course – Practical Accounting for SMEs since 2005. Chan Chi Keung, careers master of the school, thinks that ApL courses provide an opportunity for students to explore their learning interests. Cheng Wai Hung, who studied the Practical Accounting for SMEs, found that the course enabled him to understand better the inter-relationships among different accounting theories by using accounting software.

Dr. Mable Chan from the Department of English, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, reports in this issue some research findings on the text features of commercial email messages and gives you tips for writing effective emails in the workplace.+

Online Eco-Tour in Hong Kong

Although Hong Kong is tiny, over 40 percent of its land area is designated as country park. Making use of a 360-degree panorama visual system created by Green Power, you can feel the lifelike experience of seven prime areas and understand the environment, common flora and fauna and cultural heritage in each area.+

This is where we post and answer students’ questions about the accounting profession and the AAT qualification. If you have any questions you would like to ask us, you are welcome to send them to sandy.ku@hkiaat.org. We are always pleased to answer your questions.

Question in this issue:
Little Daisy: I am a Form Four student. My school offers the Applied Learning course "Practical Accounting for SMEs" for our Form Five study. I would like to know what this course is about.
Our answer:
"Practical Accounting for SMEs" equips students with basic accounting theories and trains them to use accounting software (MYOB and Excel) which is widely used by small and medium enterprises (SMEs). It uses the daily operation of a SME as a blueprint. Using different contexts, students can understand the full accounting cycle and various accounting operations in different forms of SMEs through the application of accounting software.
